Wolf Tooth Launches Hubs For Gravel, Road, and MTB
Wolf Tooth has spent over a decade building the small parts that make bikes work better: chainrings, dropper post levers, tools, headsets, and most recently pedals. Now the Minnesota company is going after something even bigger. Wolf Tooth Hubs are here, built around the ENVE INNERDRIVE system and machined in-house from aerospace-grade 7075-T6 aluminum, and they arrive in three configurations that cover road, gravel, and mountain biking.
Inner Workings
The core of these hubs is the INNERDRIVE ratchet system, which Wolf Tooth chose after building and testing its own proprietary drive system and deciding INNERDRIVE simply performed better. The ratchet rings are 42mm in diameter, larger than what you find in most hubs, which lets Wolf Tooth offer four ratchet options: 40T, 60T, 80T, and 100T. More teeth means faster engagement, and the top option engages in as little as 3.6 degrees.
The forty tooth ratchet is not simply the base option here, it is the one Wolf Tooth actually prefers, and it ships standard in every Road and Gravel hub. Called the 40T PRO, it uses a reduced-diameter ratchet with extra material milled away to save weight, paired with a lighter spring that keeps drag low while engagement stays reliable.
Pairing with INNERDRIVE is Wolf Tooth's Perfect Preload system, a tuned wave washer that sets bearing preload automatically during assembly and keeps adjusting it over the life of the hub. There is no manual preload dial to fuss with. Torque the end cap to spec and the system handles the rest, whether that is the first build or the tenth rebuild after a muddy season.
Three of a Kind
Wolf Tooth Hubs launch in three shell designs, each shaped around its intended use rather than sharing one generic body. The Straight Pull Road and Gravel hub is the lightest of the three, built in a 24h pattern and weighing 326 grams for a front and rear set. The Straight Pull XC and Trail MTB hub steps up to a 28h boost spacing at 371 grams per set, and the J-Bend MTB hub, aimed at anything from aggressive trail riding to full downhill, comes in 28h or 32h boost versions at 442 grams per set. J-Bend front hubs will accept either a standard 15mm boost axle or a 20mm front axle, giving riders some flexibility on the front end depending on their fork.
All three shells use Wolf Tooth's own angular design language, a first for the company in wheel building, and every model shares standardized bearing sizing across front and rear along with consistent spoke lengths per wheelset. Wolf Tooth also gave the straight pull hubs anti-twist, no-touch spoke drillings designed specifically for straight pull spokes, and a circlip keeps the oversized steel ratchets from working loose during service.
Color Shop
For gravel and road riders looking to match a build, Wolf Tooth Hubs launch in six anodized finishes from its Color Shop line: black, red, blue, gold, orange, and ultraviolet purple. Wolf Tooth says more colors are coming down the line, so this initial six is a starting point rather than the full palette.
What You Can Build Them Into
Rather than selling hubs as a standalone part and leaving the wheel build to someone else, Wolf Tooth partnered directly with two carbon rim manufacturers to offer complete wheelsets. At launch, that list includes the ENVE SES 4.5 and ENVE G SES 4.5, along with the We Are One Whisp for mountain riders, the ENVE M6, and the We Are One Triad in both 29in and mullet configurations, plus the ENVE M8. For gravel specifically, the ENVE G SES 4.5 is the one to watch, since it pairs the Road/Gravel hub directly with a rim built for the discipline.
Dollars and Sense
A complete Wolf Tooth Hub set runs $730, split as $240 for the front and $490 for the rear. Hubs and complete wheel builds are available now direct through wolftoothcomponents.com, as well as through Wolf Tooth's dealer and distributor network.
