Discovering Gunnison County: Colorado's Hidden Gravel Paradise with 1,200 Miles of Forest Roads

Words and photos by Daniel Palma

Hi everyone! A quick intro, my name is Daniel, I’ve spent the past seven years or so working as a freelance photographer in the mountain bike world, and I’m excited to be joining the Gravelstoke team. Gravel riding always brings me back to my roots of exploring new trails and getting lost in the scenery.

I will be in Colorado for the next three days gravel riding. Dave handed me the Gravelstoke Instagram keys, so I will be sharing my journey through photos and video clips on what the Crested Butte-Gunnison tourism team has lined up for us. Word is, Gunnison County is a cyclist's paradise! The county boasts thirty-seven percent of all the forest service roads in the state of Colorado with about 1,169 miles of gravel riding.

We will be exploring the landscape on Otso branded gravel bikes through remote canyons, mountain alleys, ghost towns, and biking to one of Colorado’s largest reservoirs. To enhance our experience, we were provided with some rad gear from Giro, Gore Wear, Pearl Izumi, Tailwind, Topeak, Xpedo, Uvex, Utu, Rocky Talkie, Rec Pak, and Camelback.

I will also be writing a full article in the coming months highlighting and showcasing the beauty and magic of Gunnison County, so stay tuned.

The Gunnison Gravel & Grandeur trip was made possible thanks to the support of the Crested Butte-Gunnison tourism team, organized by SMAK Strategies, and guided by Polar Adventurer Eric Larsen.
