The New ENVE AR40 Wheels are Sold Out, Here's Why

When ENVE first launched their Foundation lineup, the message was clear: offer premium carbon performance at an attainable price. The new AR40 wheels double down on that promise, and judging by their immediate sell-out status, riders are paying attention.

At $1,400 for a complete wheelset, the AR40 sits in that sweet spot where serious performance meets accessible pricing. But affordability alone doesn't explain why these wheels disappeared from inventory so quickly. The real story is in what ENVE engineered for that price.

Built for Speed

The cycling industry has finally figured out that wider is better, and the AR40 was designed specifically for this reality. With wind tunnel testing from the Mercedes-Benz Formula One facility, ENVE aerodynamically optimized these wheels for 28-30mm tires, while the stated recommended tire width ranges from 27-50mm. The 40mm rim depth front and rear hits the balance of noticeable speed gains without the sketchy handling of deeper wheels when the wind picks up.

The Foundation lineup applies ENVE's carbon knowledge with simplified manufacturing. The AR40 features patented molded spoke hole technology, routing carbon fibers around holes rather than cutting through them for stronger, lighter rims that hold spoke tension.

AR40 for Gravel?

ENVE designed the AR40 for road performance but tested these wheels to their full gravel standards. The wide hookless bead design includes ENVE's patent-pending pothole protection technology, dissipating impact energy to reduce pinch flats and rim damage.

The Innerdrive hub system uses oversized 42mm steel ratchets positioned over the bearings, reducing axle stress and extending bearing life. High-performance steel bearings replace the stainless steel found in ENVE's premium hubs.

The AR40's hookless design optimizes press-fit consistency for reliable tubeless performance, lower rolling resistance, fewer flats, and the ability to run ideal pressures for comfort and speed. The wheelset weighs 1,500 grams with 425-gram rims. ENVE prioritized reliability and durability over minimal weight.

Why They're Selling Out

The AR40 delivers measurable performance gains at a price point previously reserved for training wheels. Wind tunnel validated aerodynamics, gravel qualified durability, and ENVE's reputation for building wheels that last. For riders upgrading from stock wheels on road, all-road, or gravel racing bikes, the value proposition is straightforward.

Individual wheels run $630-$770 depending on configuration. Stock is returning soon, but based on initial demand, don't wait if you're considering an upgrade! And stay tuned for more ENVE news throughout the year.
