Connections - Chumba USA

It was earlier this year that I first became aware of Chumba USA, a bike company based out of Austin, Texas. Besides the fact that all of their bikes are handmade in the USA, the more I learned about the folks behind Chumba and the products they stand behind, the more I found myself admiring the brand. The company is owned and operated by two men and two women, building frames from only the highest quality materials and they approach their work with an intentionality and pride that is immediately evident if you get a chance to meet them.

Somewhere between a custom framebuilder and medium-sized company, Chumba USA currently offers 4 models including the Terlingua gravel bike. With a strong heritage of building off-road frames, the Terlingua was designed with mountain bike capabilities while still offering drop bar geometry and race performance. Available in both steel and titanium, the Terlingua is full of impressive features and smart flexibility.

I recently had a chance to visit Chumba USA and connect with the brand’s Director of Operations & Product Design, Vince Colvin. He was kind enough to show me around the shop, talk bikes and even let me throw a leg over his personal Terlingua Titanium and Mark’s Terlingua Steel. Here are a few photos of the shop and bikes we captured along the way. Details on the Terlingua can be found below.

Chumba Terlingua Titanium

Tested at the highest levels of endurance riding and gravel competition, the Terlingua Titanium offers tire clearance up to 700c x 50mm or 650b x 2.1” and big chainring clearances for 1x and 2x drivetrains. A common theme throughout Chumba’s mountain and gravel lineup is the use of Paragon Machine Works (PMW) sliding dropouts that allows for an impressive amount of versatility not typically seen. One can set it up single speed, as a short chainstay cyclocross bike, or slide it backwards to achieve geometry that resembles some of the longest gravel offerings available today. The Terlingua Titanium comes in a full range of sizes from 50-60cm. Frame only pricing is $2395, or built out with the ENVE G-Series Fork for $2925. Chumba offers pre-configured completes (ranging from $4500 and up), or customers can go with a full custom component selection.

Chumba Terlingua Steel

Like the Ti version, the Terlingua Steel has the same sliding dropout system and offers tire clearance up to 700c x 48mm or 650b x 50mm. Designed and fabricated in Austin, TX, the Chumba offers an impressive amount of flexibility on their steel gravel bike. Customers can easily order up additional braze ons and rack mounts, modify head tube lengths, add covert dropper routing or include Di2 compatibility. Select from over 20 color choices and numerous build options to suit your preferences. Frame only pricing is $1450, or $2000 with the ENVE G-Series Fork. Most customers go with full custom component selection and use one of the many pre-configured kits as a starting point. Here’s a look at Mark’s flat bar Terlingua Steel in their Team Light Blue powder coat with a Team Dark Blue wrap.
