Claire Demarquet and Don King co-lead our August ride on Saturday, August 22. This one is a single 43-mile loop with 3,700 feet of climbing through Vista, Carlsbad, and Encinitas, built around three lost tunnels and some of the best hidden dirt in North County. It's our first time starting from The Lost Abbey in Vista, connecting our favorite local dirt sectors and reliving a few legendary stretches from Hunt of the North.
We meet at 8:00 AM and roll at 8:30 from 1347 Keystone Way Suite C, Vista, CA 92081 where there’s plenty of parking and zero toilets. If you need to use the restroom you should be able to find one nearby on Business Park Drive. From there we kick it off in Buena Vista Park, hit Lake Calavera, cut through The Crossings, thread the fun little cut-throughs of Aviara, then link Encinitas Ranch and La Costa before a big finish at Simmons Park.
This one is all about the ride experience and discovery. Connect the dirt like it's the late 2010s, party like it's 2026. We'll have a cooler of Athletic Brewing waiting at the finish for the athletic choice, and we'll gather inside The Lost Abbey once everyone's back to strategize the next one.
Single route, self-supported as always. Water stops, warnings, and other essentials are marked on the official RideWithGPS route. Plan and pack accordingly.
Important Reminders
Bike Setup & Self-Sufficiency: With diverse road and dirt surfaces, the optimal setup is a gravel bike with tubeless tires at least 40mm wide. Come completely self-sufficient with hand pump, CO2 cartridges, extra tubes, multi-tool, chain links, and derailleur hanger. Carry ample food and water for 5+ hours of riding, as there is only one resupply opportunity.
Route Responsibility & Safety: This is entirely self-supported with no SAG wagon, aid stations, or course marking. You're 100% responsible for navigation, mechanicals, nutrition, and emergency extraction. Download the suggested route to your GPS device and carry a backup navigation method. Cell service will be spotty. Weather can change rapidly. Pack layers and check conditions before departure.
Trail Etiquette: Help us preserve access by staying on designated trails and never riding dirt in wet or muddy conditions. When encountering hikers, equestrians, or other riders, slow down, communicate early, and pass safely with a friendly greeting. Respect private property and follow Leave No Trace principles throughout your adventure.
And Lastly: Gravelstoke assumes no responsibility for incidents, injuries, or mishaps; this is strictly a "ride at your own risk" event. We'll likely have multiple groups rolling at different paces, so find a group that matches your comfort level and fitness. The course remains open to traffic throughout. Obey all traffic laws and stay vigilant for vehicles, especially on the paved sections.
