Actionable Illustrations For Navajo Nation COVID Relief

Catapult Design saw an urgent need to adapt CDC guidelines to the Navajo context to make it more relatable, relevant, and actionable. Building on its efforts with the Navajo Nation to date, Catapult was excited to initiate this work and collaborate with a group of Native activists at the Navajo & Hopi Families COVID-19 Relief, and Native designers at the InidgeDesign Collab. These illustrations will be shared by the Relief team across the Navajo Nation through their Kinship Care Packages. Final artwork by Colin Lawler.

CONTEXT

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, people are struggling. Those that were already vulnerable are even more so. This is especially true for those living on the Navajo Nation. Those most at risk of severe illness include elders and adults over 60 years of age, and people with heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes.

People living on the reservation are struggling to follow COVID-19 guidelines effectively in their day-to-day. Navajo public service providers (i.e. government) are struggling to enforce these guidelines despite strict curfews and messaging through commonly-used information channels.

Seeing an opportunity to more effectively promote safe-conduct to the Navajo people, and build on existing efforts to effectively communicate COVID-19 information, Catapult developed these illustrations in both English and Navajo languages with support from one of their donors.
