About the Ride

The first Great Western Reroute was the third weekend of March 2018, and there were just seven riders. It was originally crafted as an extended mixed surface riff on the Great Western Loop. The GWL is a storied Southern California route that received its name years ago from a road race that had as its title sponsor Great Western Savings & Loan. With inspiration from the original road course, a gravel route was born that incorporated some amazing gravel and dirt sections the region has to offer. The 2019 Reroute will have its own unique course, sure to be an adventure. A friendly pace will be maintained, with several regroups and planned refuel stops.

We created a few unique items for the GWR, be sure to purchase the pint glass and a men’s or women’s t-shirt with your registration. These items will not be available for purchase on event day, we will only bring items purchased with registration. Select local pickup at checkout. If you can’t make the event, we can ship them as well.

63 miles, 6400 ft, 48% dirt, resupply at miles 25 and 54, water at mile 43. We will send out a link to the GPS route on Friday. While we would love to see everyone complete the full route, there will also be some backup files for you to download just in case. These include a 44 mile option, and 3 bail out routes.

The ride will start and end at the San Diego Distillery in Spring Valley, CA, with parking on location for participants. Map

Address: 2733 Via Orange Way #101, Spring Valley, CA 91978

Please plan to arrive by at least 7:30AM on Sunday March 24, we will be rolling at 8AM sharp. There are no bathrooms at the start. We anticipate the ride will take 6-7 hours, giving us an anticipated finish time around 2-3 PM.

This team event will offer not only a great ride, but post-ride festivities too at the San Diego Distillery. I will have lunch/beverage tickets for those who purchased them. There will be no other food available at the venue.

The Equipment

With its diverse range of road surfaces (pave, smooth dirt, washboard, sand, and rocky) and ever-changing terrain, the optimal bike for the GWR is a Canyon Grail or equivalent gravel or cross bike. 35-40mm+ tires are recommended. This route is certainly do-able on less and more for the strong and finessed. Tubeless tires are highly recommended. Please ride completely self sufficient with a hand pump, CO2 cartridges, extra tubes and other needed roadside repair gear.

This is a self-supported ride, which means there is no SAG wagon or dudes handing out Cokes along the route. You are 100% responsible for yourself, your mechanicals, your food/water resupplies, and your retrieval off route (in case of emergency). That being said, there is very little cell service along the route so have a plan. Each rider who expects to participate in this ride is required to come prepared with the necessary food, water, equipment, clothing, and know-how to ensure that they safely complete the route. If you are unsure if you are capable of completing the ride successfully then have someone on call or be prepared to hitchhike your way back.

For 2019 we are thrilled to have Bonk Breaker and Eliel Cycling as our official nutrition and apparel sponsors.
