Wend Wax Chain Lube Review
By Michael Macare
WEND Wax-On Chain Lube is the first ever "rub-on" wax based chain lubricant and is the sister company of Sticky Bumps, a surf wax brand. Naturally I was skeptical of this $30 do-it-yourself product, but the bright colors and content online had me intrigued.
For $30 the WEND Chain Wax Kit includes a 4oz bottle of Wax-Off, a 2.5oz Wax-On tube and a micro towel. WEND recommends that their Wax‐Off product be used first, a penetrating liquid wax additive that cleans. After cleaning, application was simple as I followed some the brand’s online instructional videos. Wax-On is easily applied with a few rotations of the crank while rubbing it on the chain. A final wipe down completed the process.
In addition to the standard white, WEND also offers a spectrum of colors. The color application was a bit more time consuming as they come in smaller “pocket wax” containers. I resorted to using my fingers and made sure to thoroughly work the wax into each chain link.
400 miles later on my Giant Revolt Adv Pro 1 gravel bike the WEND Wax Chain Lube made a great impression over traditional lubricants. Through various riding conditions including rain, mud and sand the chain continued to perform through its entire gear range. And while the pink lost some of its brightness over time, the functionality was maintained.
The initial coat of wax lasted over 400 miles, at which point there was a noticeable need for cleaning. Although it needed a fresh application, the condition of the chain overall was better than the typical dirt or grime buildup I was used to seeing. On the second application the wax lubricant was tested again on the Great Western Reroute, a Gravelstoke Development Team event. Numerous water crossings, dirt and gravel could not penetrate my WEND waxed chain. Overall I was very impressed with the performance and efficiency of WEND Wax-On products, not to mention the cool color options!
